Port Royal Club's Visionary Redesign Moves Forward

May 09, 20242 min read

Naples, FL, May 9th, 2024 — A significant step forward has been made for the future of the Port Royal Club in Naples, with the city's planning advisory board giving unanimous support to a multimillion-dollar reconstruction project. The decision comes with a few conditions, setting the stage for a comprehensive upgrade of this long-standing private club, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022.

Located just steps from the Gulf of Mexico and built in 1959, the Port Royal Club has long served as a central social hub for the residents of the affluent area. The club's allure is so significant that membership is often cited as a key reason wealthy individuals choose to reside in the community. However, the devastating effects of Hurricane Ian necessitated a complete overhaul of the existing structures.

The planning advisory board's recent endorsement involved the approval of three key petitions that are critical for the club's ambitious plans. These include allowing the construction of a new two-story clubhouse and implementing specific parking solutions, such as valet services, to accommodate the updated facility. The proposed site, covering approximately 5.5 acres, sits within a public service district where such developments are permissible with special exceptions.

The new design for the clubhouse is inspired by the West Indies and aims to meet modern hurricane standards while offering a larger space with enhanced dining options. The goal is to maintain as much of the original charm as possible, with a design that promises longevity and resilience against future storms. The proposed building will also be elevated to comply with current Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines.

The transformation has been met with enthusiasm from the community, especially given the club's significance as a 'community jewel.' The loss of the clubhouse was felt deeply within the community, as expressed by Dick Del Bello, president of the Port Royal Property Owners' Association, who highlighted the communal spirit the club fostered. The club's membership, although capped at 700, has seen some decline due to the disruption caused by the hurricane and the anticipated costs of rebuilding.

During the planning discussions, concerns about traffic, parking, and stormwater management were raised, but the board ultimately supported the project after detailed presentations by the architects and consultants. The new clubhouse is designed to minimize its impact on the neighborhood, with features like high-performance glazing on windows and doors to reduce noise and enhance storm protection.

With nearly 60 letters of support from neighbors and the backing of local officials, the project now awaits the final decision from the city council, scheduled for June 19. If approved, the club still needs to secure additional permissions for aspects like outdoor dining before construction can begin. The anticipated construction timeline suggests a completion by late 2026, marking a new era for the Port Royal Club and its members.
